2026-10-28Rubber Compound Degradation and Surface Microcracking

Symptom/Description:
• Premature onset of a fine, network-like surface crack pattern—commonly characterized as crazing, weather-checking, or dry rot—across the rubber bellows, resulting in reduced elasticity and the development of microscale porosity.
Root Cause (Manufacturing Nonconformance):
• Incorporation of reclaimed rubber scrap in compound formulations; insufficient concentration of antiozonant and antioxidant additives; or deviation from specified vulcanization parameters (e.g., time, temperature, and pressure), collectively compromising resistance to ultraviolet radiation, ambient ozone, and thermal cycling stresses.
Consequence:
• Accelerated degradation of the bellows wall material, diminished tensile resilience, and progressive low-rate air leakage—typically manifesting within 6 to 12 months of real-world road service exposure.
Quality Control Requirements / Acceptance Criteria:
• ASTM D1149 standard test for ozone resistance: exposure at 50 pphm ozone concentration, 40 °C, for 72 hours, with zero visible cracks permitted on the test specimen.
